The Award received 370 applications from 46 different countries. 42 were nominated in health and medical sciences, 28 in educational and psychological sciences, 31 in applications of technology, and 15 for universal accessibility.

Riyadh Airports Company Wins Universal Accessibility.
His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Special Adviser to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the King Salman Center for Disability Research, Chairman of the Higher Supervisory Committee of the Sixth International Conference for Disability and Rehabilitation, chaired the second meeting of the 3rd King Salman Award for Disability Research, at the center’s headquarter in Riyadh. The Meeting was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Hajj and Umrah and the Chairman of the Award Authority, Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah.
At the outset of the meeting, the Secretary-General of the Award, Dr. Sultan Al-Sudairy, read out the statement of the Secretariat announcing the Award Winners in its third session, which reads as follows:
1. Health and Medical Sciences in the field of Disability: (Shared) Dr. Elena Grigorenko, Yale University in the United States for developing many special diagnostic tests for people with disabilities, and its profound contributions in genetics, and Dr. Samia Joseph Khoury, the Multiple Sclerosis Research Center in Lebanon, who established first multiple sclerosis specialized center in the Arab region according to the interdisciplinary methodology.
2. Rehabilitation and Social Sciences: Dr. Ahmad bin Haider Al-Ghadeer, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, who received the first position in performance efficiency of Medical and Pharmaceutical Research chairs, for 2012, and the Wall of Fame certificate as one of the top 50 intellectual leaders in the world in the field of Higher Education for 2020.
3. Educational and Psychological Sciences: (Shared) Professor Peter Paul, Ohio University, USA, for his profound contributions in special education administratively, technically, and research for nearly 40 years, and Prof. Deny Menghini, Bambino Gesù, Children's Hospital, Rome, Italy, for her global clinical expertise in special education and behavior.
4. Technical Department in the field of Disability: Prof. Cuntai Guan, Nanyang University, Singapore. He has developed many advanced technical systems to serve people with disabilities.
5. Universal Accessibility: Riyadh Airports Co. – King Khaled International Airport – Terminal 5, has completed external, internal, and complementary communication and safety system, and created an appropriate environment for people with disabilities in accordance with international standards.
The 6th International Conference for Disability and Rehabilitation will be held at Al-Faisal University in Riyadh, from 4 to 6 next December, Under the patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Conference aims to honor those who were nominated according to precise criteria represented by the size of the influence and classification of the scientific awareness publishing the scientific output. The criteria also include professional contributions or social initiatives undertaken by the applicant that serve and extent to which scientific output contributes to supporting the field of disability at the national and global levels.
370 Candidates From 46 Countries
The report of the General Secretariat of the Award indicated that 370 applications were received for candidates from 46 countries. The Scientific Committee of the Award has shortlisted applicants for the branches of the Award after adding two new branches of technologies and universal access. Also, the number in the field of universal access reached 15 candidates, and in the branch of health and medical sciences reached 42 candidates, as for the branch of educational and psychological sciences it has28 candidates, and the branch of applications of technology in the field of disability received 31 candidates. The Scientific Committee held 13 meetings during the first six months after the announcement of the opening of nominations for the award branches, to select the winners very carefully.
It is worth mentioning that the King Salman International Award for Disability Research originated from His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the King Salman Center for Disability Research. HRH Prince Sultan also followed up the stages of its preparation, and supervised the steps of its adoption, to be issued by the King Salman Center for Disability Research, and to activate the scientific research movement in the field of disability and persons with disabilities locally, regionally, and globally. This led the Award to be the largest in this field, and many leading scientists compete in it in the fields of disability from all countries of the world, thus contributing to supporting the international scientific movement in various fields of disability around the world.
Increasing Interest
It is also noteworthy that the King Salman International Award for Disability Research, since the launch of the first session, received an increasing interest from universities, research centers and international studies specialized in the fields of disability to participate and win one of its awards, as award the Award bears the name Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz. It is the only one in the world in this field that bears the name of a leader and head of state of the size and stature of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This award has one of the most accurate standards compared to other international awards in the field of disability. The award has a clear method of evaluation, and from a financial point of view, the size of the award is considered the largest in the field of disability, therefore, researchers from 42 countries participated in the first session, and researchers from 29 countries participated in the second session.
